We are pleased to present Away & Instinct, the second full-length release from Family Ravine, the solo project of Toronto-based artist, Kevin Cahill (of East of the Valley Blues, Downer Canada, Power Moves Library et al). His debut Leave Every Every Single You and its companion chapbook was a deep meditation on joining a cult and leaving your old life behind to start anew, while the psych folk guitar explorations heard on that release were conceived as the accompanying music to such a dramatic life change. On Away & Instinct, Cahill once again seems drawn towards breaking free, but in this case it’s from traditional forms of folk music. Cahill writes that, “Irish and English folk has the lyrical melody-heavy sing-song thing I love, and it's great working with structures like that and abstracting them so they don't quite wrap around as we're used to hearing, I love that. Then pushing those pieces out the window and seeing which parts can fly - I think stripped bare acoustic instruments lend themselves to gnarly ramshackle freight train blues.”

You’ll find, however, that Cahill’s “freight train blues” - composed of acoustic guitar, mandolin, and melodica - at times steers closer to a form of avant minimalism where folk melodies repeat and shift in and out of focus in a very natural, human way. Cahill explains his interests as: “Cross/flatpicking, fucked up tunings, raw and simplified textures - but thinking in a vision connected to a path with mentors like Dead C and DKV Trio and Pelt at one end and Norman & Nancy Blake and Dando Shaft and Planxty at the other. Connecting those in the middle is a sound I’m constantly chasing, and it always skips off path anyway. Folk blues fucked up by childlike freeform sabotage.”

Away & Instinct is the first of two releases that Round Bale Recordings will be issuing from Family Ravine in 2022 that explores this particular sound and approach.
