Jumpthefox is a companion record to Family Ravine’s Away & Instinct, a release that came out earlier this year on Round Bale Recordings. Where the former’s “freight train blues’ would often break down into free, unstable patterns, this new record stays structurally strong with its ensemble-like arrangements being dialed in with a little more detail and focus.

Recorded in January of 2022, Kevin Cahill clarifies his intent on Jumpthefox and with his Family Ravine project as a whole when he writes: “I’m chasing an abstracted folk sound with Family Ravine, say Nihilist Spasm Band meets Carter Family (or like a bluegrass band tuning up), I want these songs wound tight with picking, working across tunings melodically, falling into place with lots of headroom to walk the middle-of-the-night line, where danger lives, and like a knife’s edge you need that sharp. I had Sonny Sharrock’s ‘trying to find a way for the terror and the beauty to live together in one song’ as a mantra taped to my brain, and where he pushed that extreme as far as he could in both directions, everything definitely has its shadow, the world’s too big a problem for it to be any other way.”

In addition to the music, Cahill has also produced two videos for the tracks “Likeapanther” and “Jumpthefox”. His abstract, moving images are an integral component to capturing the full spirit of his recent output as Family Ravine.

Deep, mind-bending psych. I don't know how it was put together, but it feels very organic, like early Nurse With Wound. I could see Gordon, Dilloway, and Nace sitting among a pile of junk and miles of tape, splicing together this album piece by piece. Levrikon
