It's been close to seven years since Tilth - the duo of Nathan McLaughlin and Cody Yantis - put out their last full-length, Country Music, the album that launched our small label operation, Round Bale Recordings. In that time span, both McLaughlin and Yantis have moved on from living in rural settings to more urban environments in upstate New York and Colorado respectively. Place and space have been a central influence on their musical practice over the years, so this change in environments brought with it a move away from their self-described "Farmer Jazz" period towards something more uniquely rock-oriented. As McLaughlin describes it, though, they did not approach rock in the typical bombastic capital-R sense: “As we have already tried to do in Tilth, we worked on Bill Dixon’s ‘going to the center’ concept and applied it to rock music...stripping what we like about ‘rock music’ down to the bare essentials.”

Recorded in fits and starts over a five-year period but completed in an intense month-long flurry of activity in 2020, the duo’s sound on Rock Music reduces the form to dust. Sure, you’ll hear some hefty guitar riffs (“Jimmie Dale Gilmore”) and moments of fist-pumping euphoria (“Salt & Blood”), but Tilth’s rockist inclinations come filtered through a rugged ambient Americana lens where everything is time-stretched and textural. McLaughlin says, “The result when you strip something down is not a primitive sound, but actually a deep focusing of sound that provides for that rich texture we often strive towards in Tilth. To bring something down to its essence allows us to focus on singular sounds and really explore them, that is a focusing process.”

We are pleased to offer up this next chapter of Tilth’s musical journey together. Whether it’ll be five months or another five years when we’ll hear from them again, we’re happy that Rock Music has arrived as spring is about to have sprung, bringing with it a new set of possibilities that lie just ahead.
